The time has come!
I've been longing for this since December 2012.
For the Doctor to say those magic words:
"Amanda, you are fit to return to work!"
Today I walked out of my Doctors with a little jump in my step and a smile on my face. I was tickled happy.
So this coming week I begin to physically, mentally and spiritually prepare myself for what is to come.
As this week approaches and as I carry on I must remember that my health is not something to take for granted, nor is my relationship with the Lord.
I needed this time to learn how to say "No"
It's never been one of those words that has come easily to me. I love to serve, but I also needed to examine why I liked serving.
Was it because I thought I was better and not in need?
I'd like to say the answer to that is "no", but I know my heart. I am a sinner. I desire unrealistic perfection. I desire to serve, serve, serve and need nothing from others, not even God. I desire self sufficiency. I am my own idol.
These past few months I have had to learn how to accept help from others. Not something I am good at. Its weird transitioning from being able to cook your own meals, to having meals delivered to you in bed or take baths because you don't have the strength to stand up in the shower.
I saw a side of me I did not like at all. A very short, snappy Amanda came out. I was in pain and abused that excuse all too often. I'd snap frequently at those I love and they put up with me. Lord Bless you's!
To any of you I've hurt, I'm sorry. God is in some heavy business of working on my heart right now and I pray He continues.
I also pray that with my next trial, that I would face it with joy. Christ is my only hope for this. He is the only one who can develop my character here.
I pray that in all I do, may I be a woman who glorifies you oh Lord. Because when that time comes, it is you I must give an account of everything I do.
To Him be the Glory. My Rock, My Anchor, My Redeemer.

A Late Night Psalm
Inspired by: Him

It's Just Christ and me. Here darkness must flee.
There is no room for three.
Only three in one Trinity.
It's just Christ and me.
It's Just Christ and me. Even though he tempt me.
I look to the cross.
I have been set free!
Oh, the power of Jesus blood on me!
It's just Christ and me.

A thankful heart
Thankfulness...something God has been and is still teaching me.
For so long, I took my health for granted. I was able to eat what I pleased and not have to worry about working out. My metabolism has always been pretty high.
However, when my neck took a turn for the worse, so did my energy levels. I was in pain and weak all over. It was not a great feeling. I would have days where I wouldn't be able to leave the house due to extreme pain and weakness. Very challenging for me as I am always on the go.
I started getting super frustrated with how my body was feeling. I wanted to do all I could to fuel it right, so I made a call. I got in touch with a Nutritionist/Homeopath. It was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.
We sat down and started discussing how I was feeling and what my diet and eating habits looked like. She saw that I am the type of person that eats more frequently, but small portions when I do eat. That is what keeps me going. However, I need to make sure that when I do eat, I am feeding my body things that will keep it energized!
Some things we noted and discussed was bread. I am not by any means Celiac, however I don't like how bread makes me feel after I eat it {regardless of it being white, multigrain or whole wheat}. I feel sluggish, tired and worn out. So I went a few weeks without bread and noticed I had alot more energy.
Now since I'm eating little to no bread you are probably wondering what I eat for breakfast to fill me up. Well its not a bagel or toast, that's for sure. I have a REALLY hard time eating first thing in the morning. I find alot of breakfast food too heavy, greasy or it has LOADS of milk and I am lactose intolerant...so it doesn't leave me with too many options. So my Nutritionist suggested morning shakes. She said this is a great alternative especially if you are feeling weak and having trouble eating {which I was when my neck was in severe pain}. This way I would be sure to get ALL my nutrients into my body :)
Here's an idea of what my shakes generally look like. This keeps me going for a few hrs and then I need a snack.
-mixed berries
-almond milk {plain}
-almond butter {tbsp}
-hemp seeds {tbsp}
The hemp seeds are KEY because they fill you up! And when I'm working retail I need something that will keep me fueled for a few hrs til the next break ;)
So adding that into my diet kept me full and going longer.
I also added a green smoothie into my afternoons. They keep me going longer, so then I won't be running to Starbucks or Timmys for that 1pm caffeinated, sugar coated energy boost.
So as you can see, these past few months have shown me not to take my body for granted, but to be a good steward of it. I am still learning and probably always will. My goal isn't to have the flattest stomach or fittest body as that's idolatry. What I want, is to feel healthy, strong and energized as I carry out my daily tasks. Only by His grace is this achievable.

Medication OD
In my last post I was mentioning that my Doctor discovered that my Lithium levels were at the top of the therapeutic range. It was not a danger to my health at that point, however an overdose in Lithium can send you into a coma. Scary thought! I am relieved and thankful that my Doctor caught it soon enough and that my neck was the only issue. Praise God!
So after having my medicine reduced I did experience some fear that I was going to have another seizure. My body was going through so many physical and emotional changes as the excess medication was being flushed out of my body. I'd become very cold and weak and shaky...things I attribute to an oncoming seizure, hence the fear.
I spent many nights in fear and tears of the unknown.
"Will I have a seizure tonight?" is a question I would so often ask myself. Such a scary way to live.
Over the course of this fear I was honest with God about my fears and He reassured me with His peace that He is there with me, even when I'm having a seizure. Talk about a comforting message.
So needless to say, there is always the possibility that I could have a seizure, though the grand part is I don't need to fear because the Lord is with me, holding me in that moment.
In other news regarding my neck, I continue to gain strength as the days pass! I am able to cook a meal {FINALLY!} all by myself again, go to Bible study and participate with lots of energy and possibly start a work out routine with a rehabilitation trainer to help me regain my core strength so that I will not be exhausted when I return to work.
I can't even begin to describe how thankful I am that it was only a medication error. However, it makes me more aware of medication and a strong advocate for having your levels checked regularly. Especially if you put on or lose weight.
So please, if you are reading this and are taking some form of prescribed medication, have your levels checked regularly. Ask your Doctor what is in the medication you are taking. We had no idea there was Lithium in my Valproate Sodium and that is what sent my neck into Spasms {ie Medication induced Dystonia}.
The wild part is, the first Neurologist I went to see, failed to look into the side effects of my medication and wanted to inject Botox into my neck to straighten it. He said there was no other options or cure. This sounded off the wall to me. So I trusted that strong urge against the procedure and the Doctor. God spared me from having a foreign object in my body for a lifetime!
All this to say, trust your gut, given to you by God. If something sounds fishy, it probably is. Do your research and pray. God equipped me with a great family, some great knowledge, supportive Church body, awesome place of work and a select few wonderful medical professional that fought for me.
Thank you Lord for protecting me and teaching me in this time.

Update and A Call to Prayer
What a day!
I am WIPED!!!
Today I was sent to Toronto to see a pain specialist in hopes of getting some answers on my neck. Well, he definitely got us going in the right direction, and to that end I am VERY thankful!
As I told him everything I had been feeling and for how long, you know all the details...he set his hands on his desk and told me I have nerve damage in my neck.
He mentioned that this is his speculation and is not his field, so he has ordered an EMG{scary sounding thing!} to see where exactly the damage is. He also noted that the EMG will be conducted by a Neurologist which I usually may have to wait over a year to see because I am not considered a serious case. So I am to come prepared with questions ;)
So this leaves me here. Guys I am at a point of despair where I need the body of Christ to surround me in prayer. Please pray for the following:
-Pray for peace and contentment with whatever comes out of the EMG
-Pray for peace during the EMG- the whole procedure is a little petrifying as they have to stick needles into my neck to find the problem nerve, and I think they need to go in further than a regular needle would {any medical professional can correct me if I'm wrong here}
-Pray that I would be able to keep the rest of my health in check. There are days where I am SO tired and SO weak to even eat! I am debating speaking with a Nutritionist to make sure I am getting everything my body needs right now
-Pray for safe travels. We are in and out of Brighton and Toronto SO much lately
-Pray for motion sickness? Funny? Yes, well not at the time. I seem to ALWAYS have an upset stomach whenever we travel home in the evening
-Pray for my family. They have been A HUGE support system right now in carting me all over the province it feels for my health. Pray that God would bless them in their health physically and spiritually.
-And last but not least, pray that God would heal me in His Glory. Let us step out in our faith and trust that our God wants to heal His children, as He is our Mighty Physician.
We ask all these things in the name of Christ Jesus,
Amen.

Grace in Scheduling
The reality is, I don't give myself enough grace to say:
"Amanda, it's ok if you cannot go to this event because you are too tired" or
"Amanda, schedule a couple different times in your planner to make those raspberry white chocolate scones you want to make, because you may not necessarily have the strength to do it on this day and that's quite ok"
It's the idea that, there is room for grace here. Not everything MUST get done when I originally planned. Sure it is great to have a schedule and it's important for me to not let my neck own me. I do my best to make it out to Church, Bible Study and one or two social events a week {because these things are healthy in that they provide healing and growth}. But sometimes I need a break, because I'm human and I'm thankful that He gives me those grace filled breaks because He's God.

Little Victories
I really have to give God all the credit here. I have had some awesome past few days. Barely ANY pain, some twitching of my head, but no sharp pains!!!
I've also had some pretty cool blessings these past few days, here they are:
-Yesterday I was able to go to Church and partake in worship {ie. stand up and lift my hands without supporting my neck!!}
-The prayer of a sweet sister in Christ
-A reminder from God that even in my pain and stiffness, the joy of the Lord is my strength and that is all I need
-Thai lunch/Starbucks and a little shopping with some dear friends
-A great meal with my family and a Disney movie
And today:
-Lunch with a good friend from Uni and her adorable kiddos ;)
-Errands {BY MYSELF!!! AND was able to walk around the mall in NO PAIN!}
-On sale Yoga pants! {great for those days when you are in pain but don't want to look like a complete frump}
-Half off my 2013 Moleskin! {Key is buy them AFTER the New Yr ;}
-Increased appetite {amazing considering I have been struggling eating lately, especially meat because it takes SO much work for my body to digest}
All of these things are GREAT! They definitely make for one happy Amanda. But, I pray that the Lord would continue to remind me that my joy comes from knowing Him. Not in finding good deals, not in friendships, community or even family for that matter, but in Him alone.

MRI Results and Next Steps
I have never been one for crying. I like bottling my emotions up inside. I like to appear strong. I like the look that nothing and no one can break me.
Well, these past few days have been days of brokenness.
I got results back from my MRI and nothing came through...great right?
Well, kinda sorta, now we are back to square one trying to figure out what is going on with my neck.
Yesterday as I was sitting in my Doctor's office, he asked me how I was doing and that's when the water works began.
I began telling him how frustrated I was, that this really has put my life on pause. I can barely do anything for myself because I am so fatigued and I feel a HUGE sense of guilt not being able to help out around the house.
So he ordered more blood work and is going to hunt for a great Neurologist for me ;)
I also went into my Chiropractor today {who btw is AMAZING!} and she had done a TONNE of research for me and thinks it may be Dystonia {which is a form of torticollis}.
Now there are treatment options; medication or botox {which I am SUPER opposed to}, however we still need a Neurologist to look at me and give me a proper diagnosis. Then we can discuss the best treatment option.
I had another good cry today as I laid on the table at the Chiropractors. It was me coming to terms with reality, realizing this maybe something I have lifelong and asking, begging God to help me be ok with that.
It's been quite a journey, that's not over yet! My weeks are full of physio, chiropractic, massage therapy and counseling. I've realized that not only has this taken a toll on my body physically but it has mentally and I want to address those fears, anxieties and lies now before satan gets more of a foothold.
I NEVER thought that this is where I would be end 2012/beginning 2013 but something I do know for sure, I hope and pray that someone is encouraged by this and that my Savior is ever more glorified.

Your body is your temple
You get alot of time to think when your laid up on the couch or your bed because your neck is in excruciating pain. One of the things that has crossed my mind while being laid up or bedridden is exercise. See when I worked retail, I was on my feet running around for a good 8hrs and then if I was really feeling good, I'd hop over to the gym and work out. However, my shoulder doesn't really permit me to work out. At the same time I don't want to let my body slide just because my shoulder is sore.
I also don't want to use my sickness as an excuse {in any matter, be it my relationship with God or health}. I know very well what days I am feeling ok and what days I'm not. It's so easy to say:
"I'm not working out, until I feel better"
And maybe there really is nothing wrong with saying that. Maybe this is a spot that God needs to speak to me in. Knowing my heart, I know I am guilty of swaying too far one way or the other {ie. sickness as an excuse to laziness or law driven motivation}.
So I ask, what are your thoughts on being ill and caring for your body? Would you consult a personal trainer and physician to see what would be the best work-out plan? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Open your eyes
God has shown me so much in this journey:
-His love for me is not based on what I can or cannot do
-He desires to serve me
-He wants to care for me
-He wants to provide for me
-He wants to be my everything
-He wants me to delight in Him
-He wants me to sing of His love forever
-He wants me to trust in Him {even when I can't see}
-He wants me to rest in Him
There are so many other things I am sure God wants to show me, but these are a few things He's opened my eyes to. He has also shown me that even though I am off work for a season and am sometimes too weak to partake in Church or social events, I very much have a part in contributing to the Body of Christ; prayer.
But I need to tread cautiously here. I am very guilty of finding fufillment in Ministry, not Christ. I'm a doer and that is part of the reason I believe the Lord is breaking me down. He needs to show me the hard way that I cannot earn His love and I cannot find my value and worth in anything but Him.
This is a challenging lesson for me. I love to serve others, but I need to sit back and ask the Lord: "Why?"
"What are my intentions?"
"Are they pure?"
I don't want to speculate, as I don't know what God is doing, but I sense this may be a season where God desires my words to be few and that I sit and listen at His feet.

What's been happening...
So I'm not really sure what happened to me there in that last post. I debated taking it down, but then thought "no" because it was a pretty accurate picture of how I was feeling. Why, well I think it could very well have something to do with this:
Some of you may or may not know that I have been having some issues with my neck since the beginning of November now. I woke up one morning pretty stiff, thinking I had just slept on it wrong. So, not thinking much of it I went to bed that night thinking the stiffness would be gone the next day, that however wasn't the case.
A week later I find myself sitting in my Doctor's office in quite a bit of discomfort. My left shoulder was pretty much glued to my left ear, I was so stiff. My doctor examined me and didn't see any sign of a pulled muscle or pinched nerve and suggested I keep heating and exercising to see results.
One more week, and I'm back at the Doctor's in more pain. X-rays are now ordered, Doctor's notes for a few days off work and a letter for massage therapy is in order.
I hobble out of the office to get my X-rays done and nothing comes through {bittersweet}, however the pain keeps getting worse. I decide go to a walk-in clinic and the Doctor thinks it may be Torticollis. A condition of the neck, that is associated with muscle spasms.
He then refers me to a neurologist in Peterborough.
After much anticipation and hope for some answers {a proper diagnosis}. We are met by a very cold Doctor, who took one quick look at me and said:
"The only cure is Botox injections in the neck, every 3-4 months indefinitely, 475-500$ a shot." {my jaw was on the floor at this point}.
I piped up saying:
"So, there is nothing else that will work? No physio, massage therapy, chiro, meds, natural...anything?"
Doctor:
"Nothing else works, only Botox".
So we gathered the info and headed home.
Discouraged, I asked God to provide alternative options.
Meanwhile, I had been helping our Youth plan this great event to raise money to purchase farm animals and wells for people in underdeveloped countries. And on the night of the event, I am in a ball on my couch crying as the pain in my head is so excruciating I felt I may black out.
4hrs later, no answers, but feelin pretty good on some strong pain killers.
After a great night of sleep, I traveled with my dear Papa to a lovely Chiropractor in Brighton. She was determined to see me better. {she uses different treatments: electro-massage to hit the tense muscles, not the normal manipulations most use}.
Since then we have seen some MAJOR improvement {Praise the LORD!}.
However, we still don't know what it is {just had an MRI last Tuesday to help diagnose}, what caused it and how to treat it.
We are hoping and praying its nothing serious and that with more work with the chiropractor and some exercise will be all that is required.
So, it's been a journey. I find I get frustrated because I don't have the energy I used to have. I need to either take a neck brace or pillow of some form to rest my head if need be. I also have to accept help from others, which is so difficult for me. I love serving others, but really don't know how to be served. Perfect example: I can be sitting on the couch watching television and want a drink and if I even attempt to move, my dad will jump and say "what do you need? I can get it for you".
Hard.
It would be easy to say I have my hand fully opened and surrendered to God in this, but I know my heart, it's not there yet. I feel it resisting. I feel it clenching. Yet there is another part of me that just wants to let go.
I pray my fist would open, there is no sense fighting it anymore. May the joy of the Lord be my strength.

I REALLY enjoy dipping my carrots and any other veggie in a little ranch dressing. But, eating veggies with fattening dip is kind of an oxymoron. So I decided to do some research and find out which guys are less fattening and see what to buy when I don't have time to make my own.
